Branded tracking domains
Put a client's tracked links on their own subdomain — the two DNS records, how verification works, and what removing a domain breaks.
On Growth, each client's tracked links can live on a subdomain they own: https://go.theirstore.com/r/a7f3k2 instead of https://yontosales.com/r/a7f3k2. The click still reaches Yonto, so click counting and attribution work exactly the same. Only the address the creator shares and the shopper sees changes.
Setting one up#
- Choose the client in the switcher, open Settings → Tracking domain and enter the subdomain, for example
go.theirstore.com. - Add the two records Settings shows at the client's DNS provider.
- Press Check DNS. When both records are in place, the domain is verified and its certificate is issued automatically.
; at the DNS provider for theirstore.com
go.theirstore.com. CNAME cname.vercel-dns.com.
_yonto.go.theirstore.com. TXT "yonto-verify=<the token shown in Settings>"Why a subdomain, not the root domain#
A CNAME cannot sit at the root of a domain (theirstore.com), and the root is almost always where the store itself lives. Use any subdomain that is not already in use: go., shop. and links. are common.
What the TXT record is for#
It proves that whoever added the domain in Yonto controls its DNS. Without it, anyone could enter another store's subdomain and take over its links the moment that store pointed it at us. The token is new for every attempt, so if you remove a domain and add it again, replace the old TXT value with the new one.
How long it takes#
Usually minutes. Some DNS providers take up to 48 hours to publish a change. Until then, Check DNS tells you which record it is still waiting for, and you can check again as often as you like.
Which links use the domain#
Once a domain is verified, every tracked link shown for that client uses it: on the campaign's setup page, in the email sent to the creator, and in the new-campaign preview. The same code also keeps working on yontosales.com, so a link shared before the domain was added carries on working too.
A branded domain only serves its own client's links. A code that belongs to another client is a 404 on it.
If you leave Growth#
Links already shared on the domain keep working. A creator who posted one did nothing wrong, and breaking it would lose the clicks and sales it is still bringing in. New links are shown on yontosales.com until you are back on Growth. See pricing.
Removing a domain#
The same is true if the client deletes or changes the CNAME record without telling you. Settings asks you to type the domain before it removes it. Once it has, delete the CNAME and TXT records too, so the subdomain no longer points at Yonto.
To move a client to a different subdomain without breaking anything, keep the old CNAME in place for as long as creators' posts using it are live.
