Tracking signups and leads

A signup is recorded only when your site reports it. The pixel and server routes, and what never records one.

A signup or lead campaign measures cost per signup. The tracked link counts the clicks. The signups come from your site, which has to report each one. Until it does, the campaign shows clicks and no signups, however many people signed up.

What records a signup#

Two routes, and nothing else: our pixel on your site, or a request from your server.

Our pixel, on your site#

The tag goes on every page. It does nothing for a visitor who didn't arrive through the tracked link. For one who did, it keeps the click's random identifier in a first-party cookie for 30 days.

every page, in <head>
<script async src="https://yontosales.com/p.js" data-proof="YOUR_TRACKING_CODE"></script>

The call goes on the page people see after signing up, and runs once the signup has succeeded. A signup has no value and often no id, so the call takes no arguments. A second call for the same visitor within two minutes is not counted again.

the page after signing up
<script>
  // On the page shown after a signup. No value, no id.
  proof('conversion');
</script>

The pixel only reports visitors who came through the tracked link. A signup from someone who arrived another way isn't counted. See the Pixel API for every option.

From your server#

Your backend posts each signup to /api/v0/conversions with an API key from Settings. No browser is involved, so ad blockers and cookie banners don't affect it.

The key authenticates every request. The pixel carries no secret, so a signup it reports can be forged. A request to the server API can't be sent without the key.

bash
curl -X POST https://yontosales.com/api/v0/conversions \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "tracking_code": "YOUR_TRACKING_CODE",
    "click_id": "the ref value the tracked link added to the address",
    "order_id": "your own id for this signup, if it has one"
  }'

click_id is the ref value the tracked link adds to the address it sends people to. Without it the signup still counts, as reported by your server with no click. With an order_id, a retried request counts once. With neither, every request counts.

What never records a signup#

The tracked link on its own. It records the click and redirects; it has no way to see what happens on your site afterwards.

The Shopify store connection. It reports orders, not signups, so a signup campaign doesn't offer it.

A discount code. Signup and lead campaigns don't use one.

Note.A campaign's Setup & tracking screen shows how many signups it has recorded and when the pixel last reported a visitor from its link. A pixel that has reported visitors means the tag is on your site. A signup still needs the call on the page after signing up.
